2nd Grade Classroom: "Charley Harper Inspired Collage"

Charley Harper inspired collage

Artists from Ms. Sales' 2nd grade class drew inspiration from art deco illustrator Charley Harper. They began with illustrating their favorite animals and then, the crafty mama, Regina, came in to help all the kids use her die cutting machine to create stylized images of their original art. An art deco frame was donated by Wallflower Custom Framing to make this classic piece of original art bring a touch of inspired class to any home.

Three Portraits of Jazz
Mr. Gaynor & Ms. Klein’s fourth grade classes collaborated together with local artist, Nick Greigo, to make several stunning pieces of art. Nick Greigo created line drawings of 6 different African-American jazz greats; John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, Nina Simone and Dinah Washington. The students then worked using water color paints to capture the essence of Jazz and the excitement of the era using color, pattern, and texture. They each worked for several minutes on one painting before switching places with another artist and “riffing” (if you will) off of the art created by someone else. The resulting images are a collaboration in it’s most true form, and are symbolic of how the jazz greats would have created music together. The final paintings are matted and framed with an album by the musician. The children read short biographies of the artists and listened to their music while making the art. Thank you to Easy Street Records and West Seattle Art & Frame who donated albums, matting and framing for our project.
